James Vaughan and Aubrey Ray, representatives of the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, surprised Superintendent of Schools Dr. James L. Henderson with a presentation of the Patriot Award Thursday, September 5th. Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) is the lead U.S. Defense Department program promoting cooperation and understanding between civilian employers and their National Guard and Reserve employees.
The Patriot Award recognizes supervisors and bosses nominated by a Guardsman or Reservist employee for support provided directly to the nominator. HCCSD administrator, George Torre Jackson is a member of the National Guard currently assigned to the Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania for leadership training. Mr. Jackson nominated Dr. Henderson for his support of Mr. Jackson’s Guard participation.
Mr. Vaughan told Dr. Henderson that it was an honor to come from across the state to meet him and present him with the Patriot Award. “Thank you for what you are doing in Holmes County,” Mr. Vaughan said. “We want to create a partnership with the HCCSD Jr. ROTC program and connect some of our retired military volunteers with your high school participants.” He also said that an employer’s support is very meaningful to members of the National Guard and Reserve.
Dr. Henderson was delighted to receive the award which came with a certificate of recognition and some ESGR image items. “Supporting individual employees’ personal and professional growth is one of the most rewarding things I’m able to do. I was more than happy to encourage Mr. Jackson’s involvement with the War College training program. We know that continuing education and professional growth benefit not only Mr. Jackson, but our students as well.”
