The Holmes County Central Singers
The Holmes County Central Singers official inception began on Monday, November 12th, 2018 after one full week of auditioning students throughout the school from grades 9-12. After the arrival of Mr. Pierrdro Gallion, officially in October of 2018, Mr. Gallion began rehearsing with the auditioned group immediately. On Monday, November 12th, during the 1st official rehearsal, the group was officially named the Holmes County Central Singers under the direction of Mr. Pierrdro Gallion. Since its beginning, the group prepared for and performed in their 1st official performance debut with the newly named Doretha Draine Wiley Arts Academy on Tuesday, December 18,, 2018 at Durant Public School Auditorium for their 1st Annual Winter Concert. Since then, the choir is moving towards excellence having performed by invitation to the 94th Annual Song festival at Jackson State University annually, collaborative concerts planned with Rust College, Holmes Community College, and other collaborative efforts throughout the state. More recently, on Tuesday, March 19th, 2019 the Holmes County Central Singers received All Superior Ratings at the MHSAA Choral Arts Festival which is a perquisite festival that prepares choirs for the next level of competition and growth. In the 2019- 2020 school year, the choir continued to soar to new heights of excellence. In September, veteran choir members participated by invitation in the Mississippi State Choral Symposium collaborating with other youth musicians throughout the state. They have also made public appearances and performed by invitation of the City of Lexington’s Mayor and other civic leaders for the Lexington Rotary Club, Blue Cross Blue Shield Health Awareness Community Program, and many other events. They also hosted the Mississippi State University Chamber Singers at the Arts Academy Choral Hall this past November. Currently, the choir is planning collaborative performances with Tougaloo College and other colleges as well as state and national competition in New Orleans, Louisiana in the 2019-2020 school year. Due to the pandemic, these plans have moved to the 2021-2022 school year. The choir began a $10,000 pledge goal this year to offset cost for the student’s travel.
Currently, The Holmes County Central Singers have completed their first ever Virtual Choir Project in the Fall Semester, December 16th of 2020. They are now beginning their Spring Virtual Choir Project that will include various musical styles in repertoire as well as collaborative performances and support from Arts Academy High School Band, Elementary and Middle School Division Singers, and Elementary, Middle and High School Visual Artwork. This effort is a mountainous feat that took hours of virtual rehearsals, technology individual practice, musical skill, and commitment. This is a true display of the amazing talent found here amongst the students of the Holmes County Consolidated School District. Upon their return from Spring Break, the Holmes County Central Singers will be competing on the state level with the Mississippi High Schools Activities Association State Performance Assessment on March 27th virtually.
